An alcohol breathalyser is a device that measures the amount of alcohol in a person’s breath and converts it into an estimated blood alcohol concentration (BAC) or breath alcohol concentration (BrAC). When you blow into the mouthpiece or sampling cone the sensor inside the device detects alcohol in the breath sample and calculates a reading, usually shown on the screen in mg/L or %BAC.

In South Africa, the legal limit for private drivers is a blood alcohol content of 0.05 g per 100 ml | (0.050% BAC) or a breath alcohol concentration of 0.24 mg per litre of breath. For professional drivers with a PrDP the limit is lower, at 0.02 g per 100 ml | (0.020% BAC) or 0.10 mg per litre of breath. If you are unsure, always treat any positive reading as a warning and avoid driving.
